Fitness is relevant to staying healthy. Being active helps any individual keep fit. Activity through moderate exercise is essential for the prevention and management of prostate related ailments.

Exercise boosts the ideal body weight. Generally, physical movement in your everyday life is booming to health. Mortality rate is reduced in prostate cancer patients with moderate level of physical activity. Increased levels of physical activity may reduce production of testosterone which controls prostate growth and fuels development of BPH. Alternatively, physical activity reduces the activity of the sympathetic nervous system; making the smooth muscles of the prostate to relax. The sympathetic nervous system is the part of the nervous system that becomes active during stress; raising the severity of urinary symptoms. People who do physically demanding jobs are less likely to develop prostate enlargement.

Exercises beneficial to prostate health include aerobic exercises such as running, briskly walking. Five hours of vigorous aerobic exercise weekly, keeps prostate enlargement in check, reduces pain and improves the quality of life1. Non-aerobic exercise such as leg lifts, sit ups, stretching and kegel help urinary incontinence. Kegel involves the tightening of pubococcygeus muscles so they can hold urine better; it helps to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and can be done either sitting or standing. It is done by first identifying the pubococcygeus muscles: try to completely stop urine flow while urinating. The muscle being tightened is it. To do this exercise, squeeze the muscle, hold on for some seconds and release. As time goes on, you can hold on for a longer time.

Exercise helps to regulate the release of cortisol. Exercise makes the body leave its normal state of calmness and can be termed as ‘stress’ to the body which stimulates the release of cortisol in response. However, as the exercise continues, much cortisol will not be released because the exercise is no longer seen as ‘stressful’, causing the body deal with stress adequately. Cortisol also known as the stress hormone increases available glucose, inhibits release of inflammatory molecules and reduces immune function. Inasmuch as moderate release of cortisol is advantageous, prolonged or excessive release could expose the body to illness.

Just before you go on to exercise, some exercises may not support prostate health. These are exercises that mount pressure on the pelvic area such as cycling and horseback riding. Prolonged sitting could do so too. These forms of exercise exert pressure on the prostate, increasing the PSA level temporarily. This can raise a false alarm on the state of the prostate since high PSA levels depicts problem with the prostate. However, very well padded shorts or seats could help reduce the exertion of pressure on the prostate.

  1. Thanks Nwamaka. A common reason is the lack of sodium in relation to water which is as a result of a low sodium diet. However, a doctor should be seen to ascertain if there are any other underlying factors. Miral...doing good!
