Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. About 14m new cases and 8m deaths were recorded in 2012. The World Health Organization estimates that the number of new cases will rise to 22m annually within the next 2 decades.

The most common sites for cancer include lung, colorectal, stomach, liver, prostate, breast and cervix. Abnormal cells from these and other sites may grow rapidly beyond their normal boundaries; invade adjoining parts of the body and later other organs.

Although cancer arises from a single cell, a complex interaction between the individual’s genetic factors and external agents determines the nature and rate of progression.  These agents/carcinogens may be physical (UV radiations); chemical (tobacco, asbestos) or biological (viruses, bacteria or parasites)

Cancer scares us and rightly so. It creeps in unannounced but wouldn’t stay unnoticed. It begins small but grows big. It does not only invade other cells, it invades and disrupts dreams and lifestyles.

Are we helpless before this giant monster? No.

The theme for 2015 WCD – Not Beyond Us- resonates in hope. Solutions exist. Individuals, communities and governments have much to do to harness and mobilize these solutions and catalyze positive change (WCD 2015).

About 30% of cancer deaths are due to five leading behavioral and dietary risks (WHO):

1.      High body mass index

2.      Low fruit and vegetable intake

3.      Lack of physical activity

4.      Tobacco use

5.      Alcohol use.

Life style changes are choices we can all make. Indeed, cancer is not beyond us.

As the world marks the 2015 World Cancer Day, Miral invites you to make the following commitments:

1.      I will have a minimum of 150 minutes of physical exercise every week.

2.      My daily meal will be rich in vegetables and fruits and low in red meat.

3.      I will not smoke. I will not be exposed to second hand smoke.

4.      I will consume alcoholic beverages responsibly, mindful of the impact on my health.

5.      I will take time to rest, meditate, sleep and renew my energy. I will avoid unhealthy stress.
